Generating and Tracking Traffic with QRcodes

So I'm playing with QR Codes today, seeing how we can associate a campaign to a 2D barcode to send traffic to our website, and how we can track this campaign using Google Analytics. Here are the steps:

  1. Tag your landing page link, using Google's URL Builder. My URL now looks like this: http://www.airtransat.ca/en/SpecialOffers/Default.aspx?utm_source=michelsBlog&utm_medium=QRcode&utm_campaign=airTransatSpecials
  2. Generate your 2D barcode. There are plenty of free QR Code generators on the net, like the Kaywa QR generator. Or you can use a PC app like QuickMark for PC
  3. Insert your barcode on your printed campaign medium, or any medium that can display it really. Like this:

And you're in business. Of course it helps if your landing page is optimized for mobile devices. Users need a QR Code scanner on their phone. The QuickMark QR Code Reader for the iPhone does a nice job. So does the i-nigma qr datamatrix barcode reader, which has the benefit of being free. Download one and try it out on the 2D barcode on the right. Go ahead, it will generate some stats for me :) The campaign tracking will appear in Google Analytics under Traffic Sources - Campaigns:
